As you read on into the booklet, there is a section about the afternoon sessions of which there were two. The first by a director - Garth Jennings - and the other a pair, consisting of Babita Sharma representing BBC World News and Paul Lewis who is a Special Porjects Editor for The Guardian newspaper.
Below are my notes I made whilst I was at the conference:
David Buckingham
Riots
Representations - Hoodies, thugs (Depicted as well as described)
"Violent Underclass"
Racial/ethnic dimension - fuelled the riots
However media missed it out - Not true representation
Half under 20 - "Chavs" - Working class
IPSOS - MORI Survey 2005
40% - Newspaper articles are related to Violence, Crime, Anti social behaviours
11% - Negative articles
Woman in journalism '2008':
72% Negative
75% related to crime, drugs and the police
3.4% positive
Boys are labelled as: thugs, yobs, sick, feral, hoodies, lout, scum.
Only positive stories in the media about them are about people dying young.
Folk Devils and Moral Panics - Stanley Cohen
50% of adults think children/young people are feral
ROLE OF THE MEDIA
Blaming the media
Promoting violence via Rap music, 50cents, video games such as GTA
Smartphones, social networking sites (Twitter, Facebook) - put in a negative light
Ideas for solutions
As drastic as turning off the internet and suspending Mobile Phone services
Surveillance and control - Mobile Phones, CCTV, 24 Hour News
Opinions and Explanations
'Framing' ignores other viewpoints
Who claims ownership of their opinion? - MPs - People of power try to claim rights to the riots
As well as Newspapers and Columnists - Covered through various forms of media - Visual/Digital and Printed.
Ordinary people have become more important in regards to Twitter, Forums and Radio call-ins.
Everyone is expected to have an opinion - they feel as if they're experts on the matter.
Broken Britain
Max Hastings - Daily Mail
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/debate/article-2024284/UK-riots-2011-Liberal-dogma-spawned-generation-brutalised-youths.html
"Years of liberal dogma have spawned a generation of amoral, uneducated, welfare dependent, brutalised youngsters"
Unequal Britain
Riots occur most often in places of poverty and socially deprived areas.
Cuts, Youth Unemployment, EMA etc all contribute towards spurrings of the riots.
Capitilism is also an important factor.
Peter Oborne - Daily Telegraph
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peteroborne/100100708/the-moral-decay-of-our-society-is-as-bad-at-the-top-as-the-bottom/
"I believe that the criminality in our streets cannot be dissociated from the moral disintegration in the highest ranks of modern British society. The last two decades have seen a terrifying decline in standards among the British governing elite. It has become acceptable for our politicians to lie and to cheat. An almost universal culture of selfishness and greed has grown up."
BBCs Newsnight - Dr David Starkey
For David Starkey's interview follow the Youtube link below:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OVq2bs8M9HM
Again, recieving another opinion by a supposed 'expert'
Not intercommunal - Black and White, Barrier or line has been mixed
David Starkey quotes: 'literally a foreign country'
They all act together and are influenced by each other - Not rational thinkers.
Got opinions from 'experts' but not from ACTUAL people who were involved.
As a more comic view on David Starkeys opinions, a rap was then compiled from the interview I have featured above: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4GaKCBMNs4
Christine Bell - WJEC
