Analysis of Terminator 2

In our last lesson, we watched specific clips from the film Terminator 2. These regarded Sarah Connor's contrast with the main Terminator character and how their gender's were clearly represented in the extracts.

We were given the task to write an essay discussing how the camera angle, sound and images contrasted between the characters and reinforced their intentions.

We also looked at diegetic and non-diegetic sound and tried to identify them within our extracts.
An example of the diegetic sound is when Sarah is talking to her son in the final scene. She is commanding and taking control of the situation despite her vulnerable and weak state. Her voice is brash yet caring towards her son for his safety, which reinforces her natural mothering instincts.

An example of non-diegtic sound is in Sarah Connor's voice as she narrates her true feelings towards the Terminator. This reveals her more feminine side and creates a contrast between characters. Although she tries her utmost to be primarily masculine and emotionless in the face of danger, in reality, she isn't the facade she's learnt to live with.

For the camera shots, we pin pointed critical shots such as the extreme close ups on Sarah Connor's face to encourage how she is feeling and to study her expression. These shots were more frequent when exploring what Sarah was feeling, and weren't used as much with the Terminator. This could imply that because the Terminator is a machine, we should automatically assume that he has no emotion, and its not even worth showing interest.
